             President - Alessandro cau

Fourth Year: UBC M.D. Program

Alessandro Cau is a fourth year medical student who is entering into his third year with IHI. Alessandro is interested in the development of evidence-informed clinical guidelines and tools for reducing harm and improving patient health outcomes. Throughout medical school and his future career, Alessandro hopes to help make the health care system more safe, accessible, equitable and efficient. Outside of school, Alessandro enjoys playing soccer, playing tennis and spending time with friends and family.

Sandy is a second year medical student who is passionate about improving the quality of care received by patients. Sandy hopes to bring her past communications experience to IHI to increase community engagement through creative outreach. She aims to improve healthcare through greater accessibility and cultural competency. During her free time, Sandy enjoys trying new restaurants, going on walks, and socializing with friends and family.

Kristin is a fourth year medical student. Kristin comes to IHI with a strong background in quality improvement and patient safety research directed at improving surgical recovery on both a national and international scale. Kristin wishes to continue with IHI throughout her MD as well as for the remainder of her career. She is particularly passionate about the development of point-of-care tools that improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of medical care, with a particular focus on patient engagement. Outside of school, Kristin enjoys spending her time writing, traveling, watching the Lakers (when they’re winning), and fostering rescue animals.

Emily is a third year medical student who, prior to joining medicine, was working towards a combined BSc in Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Victoria. Following her first year of medical school, she developed a strong interest in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety and is eager to continue learning about such important topics as part of the IHI UBC team. As a Mentorship Director, Emily hopes to promote awareness of patient safety and QI as well as help students to engage in projects with mentors in the community. In her free time, Emily enjoys the outdoors, playing piano and spending time with friends, family and her cat.

Crystal is a second-year medical student. Prior to entering medical school, she studied physiology, pharmacology, and public health at UBC. She is interested in creating opportunities for students to engage in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives, and hopes to achieve this as Mentorship Director. Crystal wishes to pursue these same objectives during her future career as well. During her free time, she enjoys hiking, playing badminton, checking out the newest restaurants in the city, and spending time with her dog and cat. ​

Bianca is a third-year medical student who developed a keen interest in Quality Improvement (QI) and Patient Safety (PS) while taking the IHI Basic Certificate during her first year of training. Bianca is passionate about inspiring interest and engagement in QI/PS amongst allied health trainees, optimizing early introduction and application of QI/PS training in undergraduate medical education, and improving accessible, equitable health care across BC. In her future training and career, she aims to use IHI teachings and tools to implement systems-level changes to improve health outcomes in the province, as well as to enhance QI/PS training in medical education to widely equip our province’s future physicians with the inspiration, skills, and tools needed for QI/PS initiatives. In her free time, Bianca enjoys spending time outdoors exploring BC, playing soccer, baking, and spending time with loved ones.

Treasurer

Arian is a fourth-year undergraduate student in the Faculty of Science returning for his second year as Treasurer for the IHI UBC Open School Chapter. He is interested in optimizing performance metrics in surgical specialties and exploring how digital systems affect clinician satisfaction in the workplace. In his free time, Arian enjoys resistance training, playing basketball, and spending time with friends and family.
