President Role (1 position)
The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School UBC Chapter, is an educational extension-based organization with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. As IHI UBC, we represent the overall organization in the translation of quality improvement and patient safety to the community. We aim to provide QI opportunities, by engaging with partners, educators and clinicians. We work with UBC, Doctors of BC, BCPSQC, EHL Vancouver, Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, etc. We also work with partners across Canada and the world who also have IHI Open School Chapters. The President leads this overall goal and holds every executive accountable while representing the overall Chapter and creating relationships in the community. Ultimately, it is the President who gives direction on what to do and creates a healthy culture amongst the team. The President role is very time consuming and should be seen as a minimum 10-hour/week commitment. However, it is very rewarding and provides valuable experience from many different facets of life. The role of the President is to essentially lead the Chapter. That may look different for everyone, here are some things for example:

  • Works with the entire IHI UBC Team
  • Creates an organization amongst the Chapter, empowering all executives to create change in the community.
  • Completion of the IHI Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety and strong knowledge of healthcare and QI.
  • Forms strong relationships with Faculty Advisors, and other stakeholders in the community which include the BCPSQC, Doctors of BC, etc. 
  • Run weekly or bi-weekly meetings with the entire chapter or a group of executives.
  • Creates documents outlining what every executive role entails and what the goals and objectives are for the entire year.
  • Hard working, self-motivating and a leader with a strong understanding of interpersonal relationships and communication skills                                              
*** Leadership Experience is a 100% requirement. The organization and the position requires someone who has had previous experience running an organization or initiative that is similar.                                                                            
The IHI Open School UBC Team collectively:
  • Creates opportunities and initiatives in the community with quality improvement and patient safety
  • Works with community members and faculty members at UBC to educate students and professionals
  • Represents the IHI Open School and thus advocates for its courses and resources
  •  Trains students and professionals on quality improvement and patient safety by hosting events and workshops
  • Collaborates with other IHI Open School Chapters across the globe to increase awareness
  • Make this a meaningful experience for everyone involved

Ideal candidates:
  • Works well both independently and in teams
  • Reliable and able to run weekly/bi-weekly meetings
  • Strong written communication skills, very strong leadership skills
  • Has previous leadership experience (Required)
  • Has previous community partnership/collaboration experience (required)
  • Has a good understanding of quality improvement and patient safety or overall healthcare
  • Must complete the IHI Basic Certificate and be available as soon as possible for training before September 2021.
  • Note: This position officially starts in May 2021, and the academic year (September 2021) is where most initiatives will take place, however the individual must be available as soon as possible to learn about the organization and be trained.
