             President - Mahan Maazi

​Mahan is a BSc student and is beginning his fourth year with IHI, with his third as President. He hopes to influence and impact the community with goals and aspirations of raising awareness of quality improvement and patient safety and advocating for culture change and training. Beyond Mahan’s busy schedule with school, his hobbies include fitness, basketball, soccer and traveling. ​​

Arumann Dhillon is a second year science student studying Cellular, Anatomical, and Physiological Science at UBC. This is her second year on UBC's IHI council.  She hopes to expand the level of awareness about the need for quality improvement in the student community. Outside of school and IHI, Arumann enjoys doing volunteer work at the Vancouver General Hospital, writing, fitness, and participating in social justice movements.

Sean is a second year MSc student studying Epidemiology in the School of Population and Public Health. Sean has an extensive background in health research, and at UBC has focused on environmental exposures for breast cancer. Recently, he been working on projects to track healthcare worker exposure to COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health Region as well as an international WHO study on occupational health for healthcare workers in relation to COVID-19. This will be Sean’s first year with IHI as a Communications Director and he is very excited to share his passion for health sciences and learn more about healthcare and quality improvement. In his spare time, Sean enjoys playing sports and guitar.

Daniela is a second year medical student, and this is her first year with IHI. With an extensive clinical research background in cancer immunotherapies, Daniela has a strong interest in continuing clinical research alongside her future practice. She is excited to expand her knowledge on patient safety and health care quality improvements through IHI, and intends to apply such knowledge, as well as to advocate for health system improvements throughout her future clinical practice and research. Daniela has held various communication leadership roles, and enjoys public speaking and writing. In her free time, Daniela likes to draw and paint, exercise, watch scary movies, and walk her pomeranian, Harley.

Katherine is a 3rd year PharmD student studying to become a pharmacist in BC. Learning about quality improvement strategies through IHI, she aspires to better healthcare at an international level. Her goal after graduation is to enroll in a Master in Management degree, further developing her skills and contributing to healthcare improvement. Her hobbies beyond school include playing badminton, gaming, and watching videos on YouTube.

Judy Bao is a second year medical school student. This is her first year as a Workshop Director with IHI. Learning that most medical errors result from faulty systems and not individuals, she is interested in driving changes in healthcare that will lead to better patient outcomes, better system performance and better professional development. Judy is excited to explore the topic of quality improvement (QI) with the UBC student community. Beyond school, she enjoys doing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, drinking bubble tea, and occasionally watching an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Ko Ta Chen is a second year medical student. With a background in Medical Laboratory Science, he has formal training in identifying and managing laboratory errors that can compromise patient care. He is excited to learn more about healthcare improvement, and how he can contribute to this process. He also hopes to spread awareness of healthcare improvement to the wider medical community. As a future physician, he hopes to include healthcare improvement as an essential part of his practice. Outside of school, Ko Ta enjoys playing tennis, watching videos, and listening to podcasts.

Director

Jeffrey Toy is a second year medical student acting as this year’s Event Director. He has a Neuroscience background from the University of Toronto and a year of JD education at UBC’s Allard School of Law. Jeffrey once worked as a medical assistant and was mentored by the family doctor he worked under. While going over patient cases, Jeffrey realized that some patients were inappropriately cycled within the healthcare system between multiple specialists who were all unable to reach a concrete diagnosis. These experiences have inspired Jeffrey to learn more about the mitigating patient suffering from over-testing as part of his future practice. Jeffrey’s hobbies include playing videogames, losing money on the stock market and karaoke.​

Alessandro Cau is a second-year medical student who is entering into his first year with IHI. In the upcoming year as Events Director with IHI, Alessandro aims to plan events that will stoke the growing culture of health care quality improvement and patient safety at UBC and across the province. Alessandro is interested in the development of evidence-informed clinical guidelines and tools for reducing harm and improving patient health outcomes. Throughout medical school and his future career, Alessandro hopes to help make the health care system more safe, accessible, equitable and efficient. Outside of school, Alessandro enjoys playing soccer, playing tennis and spending time with friends and family.

​Gurmaan is a fourth-year student in the Honours Cellular, Anatomical, and Physiological Sciences (CAPS) program. He is beginning his third year with IHI as one of the events directors. He is excited to learn more about public healthcare systems and the various ways in which we can impact it in the future. Gurmaan is hoping to one day pursue a career in medicine and apply what he has learned in IHI. In his free time, Gurmaan enjoys going to the gym as well as watching movies, football, and stand-up comedy.

Cameron is a third-year student within the School of Kinesiology and is excited to take on the Mentorship Director position with IHI UBC. Having a deep passion for medicine and first aid, he looks forward to learning more about patient safety and how he can apply it both in and outside of the workplace. Cameron hopes to use his healthcare experience towards providing QI insight and assistance for aspiring healthcare students, as well as further developing the healthcare system/curriculum through the Mentorship Program. Beyond school, you can catch Cameron running around campus, peaking the North Shore Mountains, or throwing a plastic disc around with his friends.

Najah is a graduate student in the Master of Science in Surgery program. This is her first year being with IHI UBC as the Mentorship Director. Najah came to IHI with a strong background in quality improvement in the health system as a medical doctor and a trainee in cardiac surgery in her home country, before moving to Canada for further education and training. Here, she is a well-recognized member in many Canadian medical societies and a clinical researcher in cardiac surgery and women’s health heart disease, and she hopes to use her connection and involvement to improve patient care. Her hobbies beyond school include hiking, volunteering, reading and meeting new people.

Director

Kristin is a second year medical student. In her first year as Curriculum Director with IHI, Kristin hopes to help build relationships across diverse areas of healthcare. Kristin comes to IHI with a strong background in quality improvement and patient safety research directed at improving surgical recovery on both a national and international scale. Kristin wishes to continue with IHI throughout her MD as well as for the remainder of her career. She is particularly passionate about the development of point-of-care tools that improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of medical care, with a particular focus on patient engagement. Outside of school, Kristin enjoys spending her time writing, traveling, watching the Lakers (when they’re winning), and fostering rescue animals.

Connor is a first year medical student who is excited to be joining IHI this year. Connor has a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry from McGill University, and holds a Master’s degree in Management of Innovation from the University of Toronto. He has an avid interest in looking at healthcare from every angle, having held positions in a laboratory and hospital setting, as well as in the healthcare non-profit sector. Connor is eager to make an impact in outcomes of quality improvement and patient safety knowledge in the medical curriculum at UBC in his role as Curriculum Director. In his free time, Connor is interested in playing sports and traveling.

Thomas Hoang is a second year medical student at UBC. Having developed a strong interest in patient safety and quality improvement (QI) during his first year of medical school, Thomas joined the IHI as a Curriculum Director in order to explore new ways of delivering this important topic in the undergraduate medical curriculum. Thomas comes from a background of both basic science and science education, and is currently pursuing projects aimed at improving quality of patient care at BC Children’s Hospital. Along with other Curriculum Directors, Thomas will be collecting student feedback on patient safety education in order to inform potential curriculum changes where necessary.

Nora is a third year medical student who is excited to be joining IHI UBC this year! Prior to medicine, she was a dental hygienist in Prince George, BC for five years. She witnessed some of the healthcare challenges of living in a remote area. Nora hopes to improve health care delivery in underserviced communities and to continuously incorporate advocacy work into her career. Her mission is to better prepare future healthcare leaders to do the same and to be advocates for change. When Nora is not studying, she can be found at the gym, getting lost in her travels, or baking and indulging in sweets.

​Chihiro is a fourth-year student in the School of Kinesiology, and this is her first year being with IHI UBC as Treasurer. Through IHI, she is excited to gain a deeper understanding of QI and work with a team of individuals who share a passion for healthcare improvement. Having a strong desire to pursue a career involved in healthcare, Chihiro hopes to apply what she learns in IHI and contribute to the betterment of healthcare in the future. Beyond school, Chihiro enjoys doing ballet (having over 14 years of experience), as well as hiking.​

Jessie Wang is a fourth-year medical student joining the IHI UBC team for the first time. Recognizing that there is a lack in patient safety and quality improvement content in healthcare education curricula, Jessie believes that the programs and resources offered by IHI are invaluable for ensuring future healthcare professionals’ competency in these critical domains. She is excited to learn more about quality improvement while contributing to the success the IHI Scholarships program. In her free time, Jessie enjoys the outdoors, plays classical piano, and likes to learn languages.
