What constitutes an informed patient/provider visit? Is this being realized?
Think about what information you want to receive from your health provider (family physician, dietitian, specialist, pharmacist...etc) going into each consultation. Now, think about the information that is actually provided to you. Are there any inconsistencies?
Furthermore, where do physicians, pharmacists, and other clinicians get their information for making prescribing decisions? Are there known problem areas? How might this impact patient care?
Hosted by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School: UBC Chapter and the Therapeutics Initiative (TI) of UBC, join us to learn more about the information asymmetry in the patient/provider visit, the potential for bias in prescribing decisions and how these can be reduced. Members of TI will be reporting on novel groundbreaking research as well as providing real-life examples.
Guest speakers: Dr. Barbara Mintes, Dr. Aaron M. Tejani, and Dr. Tom Perry of the Therapeutics Initiative (TI).

QI Panel: Improving Primary Care for Complex Care Patients
As the population ages, primary health care is faced with an increasingly complex and diverse set of challenges. As health care practitioners and as a system as a whole, we strive to provide the best care for patients that achieves not only the best health outcomes through evidence-based best practice, but also the best patient experience.
The UBC and SFU chapters of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School collaborated to offer a stimulating panel event! We engaged the community in discussion concerning models of improving the delivery of primary care for complex care patients. Complex care patients may be engaged with many levels of primary care as a result of multiple co-morbidities. We welcomed a panel of experts representing academic, clinical and patient perspectives on this dynamic topic. We engaged in evening of groundbreaking discussion regarding primary care improvement in BC! The Panel: Dr. Martin Dawes, MBBS, MD, DRCOG, FRCGP Dr. Martin Dawes began his career in the UK, studying for his MD at the London Hospital in 1978. In 1992, he completed his PhD based on studies of the effects of weight gain in pregnancy. From 2002-2010, Dr. Dawes was the Head of the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University. Her current projects focus on inequities in health and disparities in access to health services. Joyce Sandercock Joyce Sandercock is a retired cytogenetic research lab scientist.
